Mancuso Named Academic All-American|
Senior outside hitter Gina Mancuso was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I volleyball team on Thursday, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Mancuso was honored as a first-team selection for the first time. Her award makes her Nebraska’s 302nd all-time Academic All-American across all sports. In volleyball alone, Nebraska now has a nation-leading 37 Academic All-Americans. Nebraska’s last volleyball Academic All-American came in 2009 when Kori Cooper earned her second-straight honor.
A marketing major at Nebraska, Mancuso has been a member of two Academic All-Big Ten teams and was a First-Team Academic All-Big 12 selection in 2010. A member of the student-athlete advisory committee, she most recently served as its community outreach officer. Mancuso has spent time in the community as a member of the Husker Connect mentoring program and has been an active volunteer on numerous hospital visits. She is also a recipient of the NU Highest Honors medallion and the HERO Leadership Award.
Mancuso was recently named an AVCA Second-Team All-American, her second All-America honor, for her efforts in 2012 after guiding the Huskers to a second-place finish in the Big Ten and berth in the NCAA Omaha Regional Final. She led Nebraska offensively on the year with 428 total kills and an average of 3.48 kills per set.
Mancuso earned CoSIDA Academic All-District VII honors in November, earning a spot on the national ballot. Junior Morgan Broekhuis also earned second-team all-district honors.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in 2012 gives Nebraska 18 volleyball Academic All-Americans in Head Coach John Cook’s 13 years at Nebraska.
