Former Omaha teachers could lose state teaching cerificates

Two former Omaha teachers could lose their state certificates for trying to hide how a student with a peanut allergy tasted a peanut butter sandwich. The incident occurred at Walt Disney Elementary School in April 2012. The two teachers, Keri Watkins and Ann Gigstad, have since resigned. The Nebraska State Board of Education has been urged to suspend their certificates for a year.
During a hearing, Gigstad said Watkins told her she saw the fifth-grade boy put the sandwich in his mouth during a class activity and then spit it out. His eyes swelled, a rash broke out, and his mother was called. Gigstad acknowledged that she and Watkins lied to the mother and to administrators about where he came in contact with peanuts.
